Keeping kids busy is the key to providing enjoyable babysitting services. A prepared sitter will have several ideas ready to help with this sometimes-difficult task. Planning ahead is the determiner of success.
Armed with the following list, you will have plenty of things to choose from to help keep the little ones happy and busy:
Plan a nature walk and art project.
Have the kids fill a bag with sticks, pebbles, leaves, and any other objects they find on the walk. Once back home, dump the treasures on a table with glue and poster board. To add a twist to the typical collage, have them tell a story with the things they found. When they finish, you can fix a snack and give each child a chance to share their story.
Mix music and art. Come prepared with a variety of music and markers, colored pencils, and paint pens. Put the music on and have the kids draw whatever pictures the music makes them think about.
Prepare a craft bag. Markers, glue, and glitter are always popular, but you can go the extra mile in your babysitting services by having a plan for you projects. Try creating puppets, for example. Then, after the puppets are made, you can put on a puppet show for the parents when they return. Other ideas are carnival games and creating your own fair.
Provide disposable cameras. This activity can be fun indoors or out. Give each child their own camera and allow them to snap away for a their own view of the day. Another option is to create an alphabet book of images.
Play ‘I Spy’. This is a game that can be played anywhere and anytime. Add a twist by using categories such as ‘all objects must be blue’ or ‘the item must be a toy’.
Design an obstacle course. This is always a crowd pleaser. And once the novelty wears off, add a twist like having the kids not use their hands or hop on one foot.
It’s time for a scavenger hunt! Don’t just make a list. Hide clues and make it so the kids need to find one clue in order to know the location of the next. Every child likes being a detective!
